Easy Rider vs Self-Riding on the Ha Giang Loop: Which Option Is Right for You?

Are you planning for the Ha Giang Loop but still don't know whether to choose an easy rider or self-riding? You are not alone. This has been one of the most common questions that loopers ask before booking their trip.

Both options offer a very unique experience, but choosing the right one depends on your confidence, preparation style, and what type of adventure you would like when come to Ha Giang.

In this guide, I will compare easy rider vs self-riding on the Ha Giang Loop so you can decide which option is best for you.

What is self-riding on the Ha Giang Loop?

Self-riding means you ride your own motorbike during the tour. This option is popular with travelers who want more independence and enjoy being in control of the ride.

Self-riding can feel more adventurous and exciting, especially if you already have experience riding a motorbike. It gives you a stronger sense of freedom and a more hands-on experience of the Ha Giang Loop.

However, it also comes with more responsibility. Mountain roads, sharp turns, changing weather, and long riding hours can make the trip more challenging.

* Self-Riding Requirements:

If you choose the self-riding option, please note that you must hold a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention, and you must also carry your original national driving licence with you at all times. The IDP and the national licence must match the vehicle category you are legally allowed to ride.

For motorbikes used on the Ha Giang Loop, this usually means the correct motorcycle class for the bike. In Vietnam’s current classification, A1 applies to motorbikes up to 125cc, while A applies to motorbikes above 125cc. If your national licence uses an older or different naming system, such as A2, it still needs to clearly match the motorbike category you will be riding.

If you do not have the correct licence documents, we strongly recommend choosing the easy rider option instead.

What is an easy rider?

An easy rider means you sit on the back of the motorbike while an experienced local driver rides for you. You can relax, enjoy the views, take photos, and experience the Ha Giang Loop without the pressure of driving yourself.

This option is ideal for travelers who:

  • do not have much riding experience

  • want to feel safer and more relaxed

  • want to focus on scenery, culture, and the overall experience

  • prefer comfort over control

Easy rider is also a great option for couples, first-time visitors, and travelers who want to enjoy Ha Giang without worrying about the road.
